Open Source Alternatives to Buffer

By Andrei Last updated: October 30, 2026 8 min read

Open source alternatives to Buffer look free on GitHub, and the software is. Running it is where the cost shows up. To publish anywhere, a self-hosted scheduler needs your own approved developer app on every network. That means a Meta app that has passed review for Instagram and Facebook publishing. It means a TikTok app that has passed the Content Posting API audit (until then, everything you post is private). It means a Google Cloud project with YouTube quota, a LinkedIn app approved for page posting, and paid X API access. Each one has its own forms, its own review queue and its own way of breaking a few months later. Then you have to host the thing: a server, a database, Redis, file storage, backups, SSL, and updates every time a platform changes its API.

If you enjoy that kind of work, the five tools below are good. If you just want your posts to go out, SchedPilot is $21 a month and all of the above is already done for you.

We make SchedPilot, so factor that in. We’ve still tried to give each open source project a fair write-up, because some of them are genuinely impressive.

The hidden setup behind every self-hosted scheduler

This part never makes it into the README, so here it is in detail.

Meta (Instagram and Facebook). You create a Meta developer app, verify your business, record screencasts of your app using each permission, and submit for review. Publishing to Instagram needs advanced access to the content publishing permissions, and Meta reviewers reject submissions for small things like a missing privacy policy link or a video that doesn’t show a step clearly. Some open source maintainers warn that Meta approval alone can take weeks.

TikTok. Unaudited TikTok apps can only post as private, visible to the account owner and nobody else. To post publicly you need to pass TikTok’s audit of your app, which looks at how your interface shows privacy settings and creator info before posting.

YouTube. A new Google Cloud project gets a daily API quota, and a single video upload eats a big slice of it. Upload more than a handful of Shorts a day and you need to request more quota, which goes through Google’s own audit.

LinkedIn and X. LinkedIn’s API for posting to company pages needs a separate product approval. X charges for API write access, so the “free” self-hosted install now has a monthly bill attached for one network.

Then add Pinterest, Threads and the rest. And these approvals aren’t one-time. Platforms change scopes, deprecate endpoints and re-review apps, and on a self-hosted install you’re the one who notices when Instagram stops publishing on a Tuesday morning.

Hosting is the smaller job, but it’s still a job. Most of these tools need a web process, a background worker, PostgreSQL, Redis and S3-compatible storage for media. A small VPS or a Railway deployment runs about $5 to $10 a month. The real cost is the evenings spent on updates, backups, failed queue workers and expired tokens.

1. Postiz

Postiz is the biggest open source social media scheduler by a wide margin, with well over 30,000 GitHub stars and very active development. It’s licensed AGPL-3.0, and the self-hosted build has the same features as the paid cloud version. It publishes to 30+ networks, including the usual big ones plus Bluesky, Mastodon, Discord, Telegram and Reddit. You also get AI writing tools, team collaboration, a public API and an MCP endpoint for AI agents.

Good for: developers who want the broadest network coverage and are comfortable with Docker.
The catch: you supply your own API approvals for every one of those 30 networks, and your own OpenAI key for the AI features. The hosted version starts at $29 a month for 5 channels, which is more than SchedPilot’s 5-account plan. We wrote a longer comparison in our Postiz alternatives piece.

2. Mixpost

Mixpost is a Laravel app with a long track record, and its pricing model is unusual: everything is self-hosted, and paid editions are one-time licences instead of subscriptions. The free Lite edition is MIT-licensed, but it publishes to just three places: Facebook Pages, X and Mastodon. Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, Threads and Bluesky all require Pro, which is $299 one-time (with a year of updates). Enterprise is $1,199 one-time and adds full white labelling.

Good for: agencies that hate subscriptions and have someone technical in-house.
The catch: the open source part is the limited part. Once you pay $299 for Pro, you still host it yourself and still get every platform approval on your own. There is no hosted Mixpost.

3. BrightBean Studio

BrightBean Studio is the newcomer here, a Django project under AGPL-3.0 that has grown quickly to a couple of thousand GitHub stars. It was built by someone whose partner was paying around $400 a month for agency tools, and it shows: separate workspaces per client, multi-step approval workflows, a client review portal and a unified inbox. It publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon and Google Business Profile, and ships with an MCP server and REST API.

Good for: small agencies that want approvals and client workspaces without per-seat pricing.
The catch: it’s young, under a year old, so expect rough edges. Self-hosting needs PostgreSQL, a separate background worker and S3 storage on most cloud hosts, plus the same per-platform app approvals as everything else on this list.

4. TryPost

TryPost is another Laravel-based scheduler, shipped as a single Docker image that bundles the web app, queue workers, scheduler and WebSocket server. It’s open source under AGPL, publishes natively to about 12 networks, and includes a visual drag-and-drop calendar, a media library, a REST API and an MCP server so Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT can schedule posts for you. Unlimited accounts and posts when self-hosted.

Good for: people who want the simplest self-hosted deployment on this list.
The catch: the single container still needs PostgreSQL and Redis next to it, AI features need your own provider key, and the community is small compared to Postiz. Its licence has also changed over time, so read the current terms before building a business on it.

5. Socioboard

Socioboard is one of the oldest open source social media tools around, with a community edition on GitHub and a commercial hosted version. Its scope goes beyond scheduling into a shared inbox, social CRM features and reporting.

Good for: developers who want a large existing codebase to fork and customise.
The catch: the open source repo hasn’t tagged a release since 2019, and its own GitHub discussions include threads asking whether the project is dead. Several platform integrations depend on APIs that have changed since then. We include it because it still comes up in every open source list, but we wouldn’t run a business account on it in 2026.

What “free” really costs when you self-host

Put a number on it. Hosting is $5 to $10 a month. X API access, if you post to X, is extra on top. Then the setup: creating and getting approval for apps on Meta, TikTok, Google and LinkedIn is easily a few days of work spread across weeks of waiting. After that, maybe an hour or two a month on updates, broken tokens and platform changes.

Value your time at even $20 an hour and the first month of a “free” scheduler costs more than a year of SchedPilot. That’s not a knock on open source. For a developer building something custom, or an agency that needs data on its own servers, self-hosting is the right call. For a business that wants Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn posts going out on schedule, it’s a hobby you didn’t sign up for.

SchedPilot dashboard, a hosted alternative to open source Buffer alternatives

SchedPilot: the $21 version where it’s all taken care of

SchedPilot already has approved apps with Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, X, Threads, Bluesky and Pinterest. You click connect, log in to your account, and you can post. No developer portals, no review screencasts, no private-only TikTok posts, no server.

Silver is $21 a month billed yearly ($29 monthly): 5 accounts, 450 posts a month, analytics, AI post suggestions and API access. Gold is $35 yearly ($39 monthly): 20 accounts, unlimited posts, 5 workspaces, AI-generated posts and hooks, and replying to comments from the dashboard. Every plan includes our REST API and MCP server, which is most of what developers go to open source for in the first place. You can connect Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or n8n and have them queue posts across every account.

What you give up compared to self-hosting: your data lives on our servers, not yours, and you can’t modify the code. There’s no free plan, just a 7-day trial ($0 charged up front, card required). If owning the stack is a hard requirement, pick Postiz or BrightBean Studio from the list above.

If you’re comparing hosted tools rather than open source ones, our full list of Buffer alternatives covers ten options with real pricing. And if you’re still deciding whether Buffer’s own free plan is enough, we broke that down in Is a Buffer free account worth it?
