Best Time to Post on Instagram in NZ (2026): Hours by Day in NZST/NZDT
The best time to post on Instagram in New Zealand is 7 to 9 PM on weekdays, with a strong second window early in the morning from 7 to 8:30 AM. Tuesday and Wednesday are the strongest days, Sunday morning is the best weekend slot, and Friday and Saturday evenings are the two to skip. If you get one post a week, make it Tuesday at 7:30 PM.
New Zealand runs earlier than almost any other market. The whole country is up by 6:30, at the desk by 8:30, eating by 6:30 PM and mostly done scrolling by 9:30.
That compresses the evening peak and makes the morning window unusually valuable, and it’s the thing overseas timing guides get wrong when they tell Kiwis to post at 10 PM.

Best time to post on Instagram in NZ, at a glance
| Best window (NZ local) | Best days | |
|---|---|---|
| Overall | 7:00–9:00 PM | Tuesday, Wednesday |
| Second window | 7:00–8:30 AM | Every weekday |
| Reels | 7:00–9:00 PM | Tue, Wed, Sun |
| Carousels and photos | 12:00–1:00 PM | Tue, Wed, Thu |
| Stories | 6:30–8:00 AM and 8:30–9:30 PM | Weekdays |
| Weekends | Sun 9–11 AM, Sat 9–11 AM | Sunday |
| Avoid | Friday 6–10 PM, Saturday 6–10 PM, Christmas–Waitangi Day evenings |
The times work in both NZST and NZDT, because the clock change moves daily life with it. Post 20 to 30 minutes before the window opens so the first views land inside the peak. If you’d rather not be at your phone at 6:40 PM every night, an Instagram scheduler handles that for you; more on that at the end.
Why mornings matter more here
In most countries the morning Instagram window is a quick Story check on the commute. In New Zealand it’s a real feed session. Commutes are short, people wake early, and a lot of the country checks Instagram with the first coffee before 7:30. Reels posted at 7 AM on a Tuesday regularly outperform the same Reel posted at 8 PM, particularly for fitness, food, outdoors and parenting accounts.
Three things shape the rest of the day:
- Early dinner. 6 to 6:30 PM is normal, which puts the evening scroll at 7 and fading by 9. There is no 10 PM peak; anyone telling you to post then is converting an Australian or US chart.
- Winter. From June to August it’s dark by 5:30 and the evening window starts closer to 6:30. In summer, especially in Auckland and Wellington, long light evenings keep people outside until 8:30 and the peak lands later, 8 to 9:30.
- Weekends are for going outside. Saturday and Sunday daytime usage is low; people are at the beach, the bush or the kids’ sport. The weekend peaks are early morning and, on Sunday only, a modest evening.

Day by day (all times NZ local)
| Day | Best window | Backup | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | 7:00–8:30 PM | 7:00–8:00 AM | Slow day. Morning is a safe bet |
| Tuesday | 7:00–9:00 PM | 7:00–8:30 AM | Best day of the week |
| Wednesday | 7:00–9:00 PM | 12:00–1:00 PM | Close second |
| Thursday | 7:00–8:30 PM | 7:00–8:00 AM | Peak ends a little earlier |
| Friday | 7:00–8:30 AM | 12:00–1:00 PM | Post early. Friday nights are out of the house |
| Saturday | 9:00–11:00 AM | 7:00–8:30 PM* | *Only on non-rugby nights |
| Sunday | 9:00–11:00 AM | 7:00–8:30 PM | Best weekend day; evening is fine |
Friday is the clearest “post early” day in the calendar. After-work drinks start at 4:30 and the evening scroll doesn’t happen. Saturday evening is either a party or a game.
Reels, carousels and Stories
Reels want two slots: 7 to 9 PM Tuesday and Wednesday, and 7 AM Tuesday to Thursday. Test both; morning wins more often in NZ than anywhere else. Carousels want lunch, 12 to 1 PM, Tuesday to Thursday, because they earn reach from saves and people save at the desk. Keep them at least an hour apart if they’re on the same day.
Stories get two pushes: 6:30 to 8 AM, which is the highest tap-through window of the day, and 8:30 to 9:30 PM in bed.
Rugby, the summer shutdown and the Aussie audience
The New Zealand calendar moves engagement more than the clock does.
- All Blacks and Super Rugby. Test matches kick off around 7:35 PM Saturday and Super Rugby games run Friday and Saturday nights. The evening window on those nights is gone for a large part of the audience. Post in the morning, or right after the final whistle; the post-match scroll at 9:45 PM is strong, especially after a win.
- Christmas to Waitangi Day. From about December 20 to February 6 the country is at the bach. Evening engagement drops, mid-morning (9 to 11 AM) rises, and launches stall. Post lifestyle and summer content in the morning and hold anything that needs a considered response until mid-February.
- Public holiday Mondays. Anniversary days, Matariki, King’s Birthday and Labour Day all behave like a Sunday: morning window only.
- School holidays. Four two-week blocks a year; parenting and family accounts see mornings climb and evenings fall.
Then there’s Australia. A lot of Kiwi accounts have 15 to 30 percent of their followers across the Tasman, and Kiwis on their OE in London show up too.
| Follower location | 7:30 PM NZ is | Their evening peak, in NZ time |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney / Melbourne / Brisbane | 5:30 PM (4:30 PM in NZ summer for Brisbane) | 9:30–11 PM |
| Perth | 3:30 PM | 11:30 PM–1 AM |
| London | 8:30 AM | 6–8 AM |
| Los Angeles | 12:30 AM | 2–4 PM |
The good news is the NZ 7 AM window lands at 6 to 8 PM in London, so a morning Reel reaches both the Kiwi commute and the UK evening. The Australian evening is the harder one: 9:30 PM in NZ is past the local peak, which is where scheduling earns its keep.
Check your own chart
Everything above is a starting point. Open your professional dashboard, go to Insights, tap Total followers and scroll to Most active times. It’s shown in your phone’s local time, so from NZ it’s already NZST or NZDT. Under a thousand followers the chart is too noisy; above that, alternate your best morning and evening slots for two weeks with comparable content, then compare reach at 48 hours and saves rather than likes. The best time to post calculator will do the arithmetic if you paste in the Insights data.

Scheduling it
The morning window means posting at 6:40 AM, the Australian audience wants 9:30 PM, and if you’re an agency running NZ accounts from Sydney, Singapore or London the gap gets wider. Schedpilot’s Instagram scheduler publishes Reels, carousels and Stories at the NZ minute you set, directly, with no phone notification to confirm, and handles the NZST to NZDT change without you re-entering times.
Load the summer calendar in one go with the bulk scheduling guide, and check the how to schedule Instagram Reels post for the music-licensing catch.
Three to five posts a week, mostly Reels, plus daily Stories, is the pace NZ accounts grow at. Get the hook right first, then the caption (the 400+ Instagram captions post if you’re stuck), and only then worry about the hour. For the wider picture, the global best time to post on Instagram post compares markets.
Start with Tuesday 7:30 PM and Tuesday 7 AM, keep the rugby draw next to your content calendar, and let your Insights correct me after two weeks.
