Best Time to Post on Instagram in Australia (2026): Hours by Day in AEST/AEDT

By Andrei Last updated: October 3, 2026 11 min read

The best time to post on Instagram in Australia is between 6 and 9 PM Sydney time, Monday to Thursday. There’s a smaller window on Friday morning from 8 to 10 AM, when people are planning the weekend.

Monday and Thursday are the strongest days. Saturday is the weakest day of the week, and Sunday has one good hour, from 8 to 9 PM.

If you only get one post a week, make it Thursday at 8 PM Sydney time. That’s the one slot that lands in the evening for every capital city, including Perth.

That answer holds for consumer accounts with followers spread along the east coast. It shifts if your audience is in Western Australia, if you post during daylight saving, or if State of Origin is on, and the rest of this guide covers each of those.

If you’d rather not be on your phone at 8 PM every Thursday, we have a tool to schedule Reels on Instagram.

Best time to post on Instagram in Australia, at a glance

Best window (Sydney time) Best days
Overall 6:00–9:00 PM Monday, Thursday
Second window 8:00–10:00 AM Friday
Reels 7:00–9:30 PM Mon, Wed, Thu
Carousels and photos 12:00–1:00 PM or 6:00–7:00 PM Tue, Wed, Thu
Stories 7:00–8:30 AM and 8:30–10:00 PM Every weekday
Weekends Sat 9–11 AM, Sun 8–9 PM Sunday
Avoid Saturday afternoon, Origin nights after 8 PM (see below)

Post 20 to 30 minutes before the window opens. Instagram needs a few minutes to start distributing a Reel, and the first burst of views should land inside the peak.

The overall windows and the day-by-day table below are built on Sprout Social’s 2026 Australian dataset, which puts Instagram’s peak at 5 to 10 PM from Monday to Thursday. I’ve narrowed that to the middle of the block. The format-specific rows are my own read, so treat them as a starting point.

Why Australia peaks in the evening and goes quiet on Saturday

Australia is an early country. Gyms are full at 6 AM, tradies start at 7, and a lot of offices are empty by 5:30. Dinner is early too, which means the couch-and-phone part of the night starts around 6:30 and is mostly over by 9:30. Compare that with the Philippines or Malaysia, where the peak is still going at 11.

Sprout describes the weeknight block as second-screening, and that matches what you see in any Australian lounge room: the TV is on and so is Instagram.

Weekends are the opposite. Saturday is the worst day for Instagram in Australia, because people are at kids’ sport, at the beach, at Bunnings, or at the footy. There’s a short window over breakfast and then very little until the evening. If you post a Reel at 2 PM on a sunny Saturday and it dies, the Reel wasn’t the problem.

Lunch is weaker than you’d expect. The Australian data shows no real midday peak on Instagram, so I’d only use 12 to 1 PM for carousels, and only as a backup.

Mornings depend on the city. Sydney and Melbourne have long train and tram commutes, so the 7 to 8:30 AM Story window works there. Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide mostly drive, and nobody is watching Stories on the Mitchell Freeway.

Day by day (Sydney time)

Day Best window Backup What’s going on
Monday 6:00–9:00 PM 12:00–1:00 PM One of the two best days. People stay in on Mondays
Tuesday 6:30–9:00 PM 7:00–8:30 AM The peak starts about an hour later than other weeknights
Wednesday 6:00–9:00 PM 12:00–1:00 PM Reliable, except on State of Origin nights
Thursday 6:00–9:00 PM 7:00–8:30 AM Best day of the week
Friday 8:00–10:00 AM 6:00–7:00 PM Morning beats evening. People are choosing where to eat and what to do
Saturday 9:00–11:00 AM 6:00–8:00 PM Weakest day. The afternoon is close to empty
Sunday 8:00–9:00 PM 9:00–10:30 AM One good hour before the working week starts

Friday is the day most accounts get wrong. The instinct is to post Friday night, but by 8 PM a good share of your audience is at the pub or out to dinner. Friday morning is when they’re scrolling for somewhere to go, which makes it the best slot of the week for cafes, restaurants, venues and events.

Five time zones, and what daylight saving does to them

This is the part generic guides skip. In winter Australia has three time zones. In summer it has five, because New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, Tasmania and South Australia move their clocks forward and Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory don’t. This summer’s daylight saving runs from 4 October 2026 to 4 April 2027.

Here’s what an 8 PM Sydney post looks like around the country.

City Winter (April to October) Summer (October to April)
Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart 8:00 PM 8:00 PM
Brisbane 8:00 PM 7:00 PM
Adelaide 7:30 PM 7:30 PM
Darwin 7:30 PM 6:30 PM
Perth 6:00 PM 5:00 PM

Roughly four in five Australians live on east coast time, so Sydney time is the right default for a national account. And 8 PM Sydney is the slot that still works everywhere: even in summer it reaches Perth at 5 PM, right as the evening window opens there.

Go earlier and you lose the west. A 6 PM Sydney post in January arrives in Perth at 3 PM, when people are still at work.

Three practical rules:

  • If more than a quarter of your followers are in WA, post twice. Once at 7 PM Sydney time and again, with different creative, at 7 PM Perth time.
  • Queensland accounts should remember that Brisbane is an hour behind Sydney from October to April. A Gold Coast business with followers over the border in Tweed Heads has an audience in two time zones a few streets apart.
  • Set your scheduler to the Sydney time zone by name. If it stores a fixed UTC offset, every post will be an hour out after the clocks change.

Reels, carousels and Stories

Reels

Evening, 7 to 9:30 PM. Reels are graded on watch time, and Australians watch them after dinner with the TV on in the background. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings are the best three Reel slots. I’d skip Friday night for Reels entirely.

Carousels and single images

Early evening, 6 to 7 PM, or lunch from 12 to 1 PM on Tuesday to Thursday. Carousels earn reach from saves and shares, and they hold up better than Reels in a short scroll. If you post a carousel and a Reel on the same day, put the carousel at 12:30 and the Reel at 7:30, never within an hour of each other.

Stories

Two pushes. The commute window, 7 to 8:30 AM, catches people on the train in Sydney and Melbourne. The wind-down window, 8:30 to 10 PM, catches them in bed. Stories expire, so early views count for a lot.

Origin, grand finals, the Cup and the summer shutdown

The Australian calendar moves Instagram engagement more than the clock does.

State of Origin is the big one, because it lands on the best posting slot of the week. The three games are played on Wednesday nights between late May and July, kicking off just after 8 PM, and they are among the most-watched broadcasts of the year in New South Wales and Queensland. If your audience is in either state, post before 7 PM on Origin nights or wait until Thursday. Victoria, South Australia and WA mostly don’t care, and their Wednesday is normal.

The AFL grand final (last Saturday in September) does the same thing to Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, and the NRL grand final a week later does it to Sydney and Brisbane. Post in the morning on both days.

Melbourne Cup is the first Tuesday in November, with the race at 3 PM Melbourne time. Fashion, food and hospitality content does well that morning. Everything else can wait until the evening, and in Victoria it’s a public holiday, so the whole day behaves like a Sunday.

For anyone selling something, the dates that matter are the end-of-financial-year sales in June, Black Friday in late November (now bigger than Boxing Day for most online retailers) and Boxing Day itself. Post product content in the morning on sale days, when people are deciding what to buy.

Then the summer shutdown. From Christmas until Australia Day on 26 January, a large part of the country is on leave and school is out. Weekday routines disappear, the evening peak flattens, and daytime engagement rises because people are scrolling at the beach house at 11 AM. During those five weeks, treat every day like a Saturday morning and post between 9 and 11 AM.

Public holidays and school terms also differ by state. A Monday that is a normal working day in Sydney can be a long weekend in Perth, so check the calendar for the state your followers are in.

Posting for followers overseas

Tourism operators, exporters and creators often have a big share of followers in New Zealand, the UK or the US. Open Insights, check your top cities, and if Auckland, London or Los Angeles show up, this table tells you when their 8 PM falls on your clock.

Follower location Their 8 PM, in Sydney time (summer) Their 8 PM, in Sydney time (winter)
Auckland 6 PM 6 PM
Singapore 11 PM 10 PM
London 7 AM next day 5 AM next day
New York 12 PM next day 10 AM next day
Los Angeles 3 PM next day 1 PM next day

New Zealand is easy. A 6 PM Sydney post reaches Auckland at 8 PM, and the best time to post on Instagram in NZ guide has the detail.

The UK and the US are the hard ones, because their evening is your early morning or the middle of your working day. Pick one audience per post. A Reel at 7 AM Sydney time in summer catches London’s evening and Australia’s commute at once, which is the only slot that serves both. Nobody wants to be up at 5 AM in July to hit the same window, which is where scheduling comes in.

Check your own numbers

Everything above is a starting point. Instagram gives you the real answer for free.

  1. Open your professional dashboard and go to Insights
  2. Tap Total followers and scroll to Most active times
  3. Switch between Hours and Days. It covers the last 7 to 30 days
  4. Confirm the time zone. The chart uses your phone’s local time, so a Perth phone shows Perth hours even if most of your followers are in Sydney

Under a thousand followers the chart is too noisy to trust, so use the table until you get there. Above that, run a two-week test alternating a 7:30 PM slot with an 8 AM slot, keep the content comparable, and compare reach at 48 hours and saves, not likes. The best time to post calculator will do the arithmetic if you paste in the Insights data.

Scheduling across five time zones

The Australian evening window is awkward for anyone running an account as a job. It sits right on dinner and bath time, and a Perth-based social manager with a Sydney audience has to post at 4 PM in summer for a 7 PM east coast slot, then remember it moves to 5 PM in April. Agencies running Australian accounts from London or Manila have it worse.

Schedpilot’s Instagram scheduler publishes Reels, carousels and Stories directly at the Sydney, Brisbane or Perth minute you set, from wherever you are, with no notification to confirm on your phone. You can queue the east coast and WA versions of a post three hours apart, set a different time for the TikTok and YouTube Shorts versions of the same clip, and load the whole Christmas-to-Australia-Day calendar before you go on leave with the bulk scheduling guide.

Three to five feed posts a week, mostly Reels, plus daily Stories is a pace Australian accounts can keep up without the quality dropping. The how to schedule Instagram Reels post covers the mechanics, including the music-licensing catch on scheduled Reels.

What the hour won’t fix

A weak first second at Thursday 8 PM is still a weak first second. Timing decides how many people see the opening frame, and the hook decides whether they stay. Fix the hook, then the caption (the 400+ Instagram captions post if you’re stuck), then the hashtags, which are down to five per post (the best Instagram hashtags list is grouped in fives for that reason).

For how Australia compares with other markets, the global best times to post on Instagram post has the wider picture.

Start with Thursday 8 PM and Monday 7 PM Sydney time, add a Friday 8:30 AM post if you’re in hospitality, and let your Most Active Times chart correct me after two weeks.
