Best Instagram hashtags in 2026: 300 tags in five-hashtag sets (because that’s the limit now)
Most lists of “best Instagram hashtags” are still telling you to paste 11 to 30 tags under every post. Instagram stopped accepting more than five on 18 December 2025. If you try to add a sixth, the app won’t publish the caption, and if you stuff them into a comment, the comment won’t post either.
That’s the small change. The bigger one is what Instagram itself says hashtags do. Adam Mosseri, who runs Instagram, has said repeatedly since 2024 that hashtags don’t meaningfully increase reach, and in a July 2026 Q&A he went further: they never really did. What moves distribution is watch time, likes and sends. Hashtags tell Instagram’s search what a post is about, and that’s it.

So this guide is built for the rules that actually apply. Short version of what’s below: use three to five specific tags as labels, put real keywords in the caption, and stop treating hashtags as a growth lever. Then the sets, organised by niche, each one already five tags long.
What changed, and when
| Date | Change |
|---|---|
| Nov 2020 | Instagram search starts matching typed words in captions, not only hashtags and usernames |
| Sept 2021 | Instagram’s @creators account says 3 to 5 relevant tags; adding 10 to 20 won’t get extra distribution |
| Mar 2024 | Tapping a hashtag opens search results instead of a dedicated hashtag feed |
| May 2024 | Mosseri: hashtags “won’t necessarily increase your content’s visibility” |
| Late 2024 | Ability to follow a hashtag removed |
| Jul 2025 | Public content from professional accounts becomes indexable by Google |
| 18 Dec 2025 | Hard limit of 5 hashtags per post or Reel |
| Jul 2026 | Mosseri Q&A: hashtags never meaningfully drove reach; effect is “on the margins” |
Two consequences for how you use them. Since nobody can follow a hashtag any more, there is no passive audience waiting on the other side of #travelphotography. And since tapping a tag now runs a search, a hashtag is only as useful as the search results it lands your post in. Which is the same thing a keyword in your caption does, without using a slot.
What hashtags still do
Three things, and they’re all worth the thirty seconds it takes.
They label the post for search. Instagram’s search reads captions, usernames, bios and hashtags. A tag like #sourdoughbaking is an unambiguous signal about what the post is, and it can still surface you in search results for that topic. Since July 2025, that labelling also matters for Google, which now indexes public posts from Business and Creator accounts.
They organise campaigns and communities. A branded tag (#MadeWithSchedPilot, #NikeRunClub, whatever yours is) collects user content in one searchable place. That never depended on reach and still works.
They tell a human what the post is about at a glance. Under a Reel with no caption context, #beforeandafter or #tutorial does real work for the viewer.
What they don’t do: push your post to thousands of strangers. If a guide quotes “posts with 11 hashtags get 79% more engagement” or any similar figure, that number traces back to studies from 2016 to 2020 that were done under a different algorithm, and none of them came from Instagram.
How many hashtags to use on Instagram
Three to five. Five is the maximum, and Instagram’s own advice when it introduced the cap was that fewer, more targeted tags can improve both performance and the viewer’s experience. Zero is fine on a post where the caption already says what it is.
Don’t fill five for the sake of it. Each tag should pass one test: if someone searched that exact term, would they be glad to find this post? A cake decorator posting a wedding cake passes with #weddingcake and #buttercreamflowers and fails with #love and #instagood.
How to build a five-hashtag set
The old formula was a pyramid: a few huge tags, some mid-sized ones, a base of niche tags, thirty in total. With five slots the shape is different.
One or two topic tags that name the subject at the level a searcher would type it: #sourdough, #streetphotography, #homeworkout.
Two or three specific tags that narrow it: the sub-genre, the technique, the format, the location. #openbakeshot, #35mmfilm, #kettlebellworkout, #austintexas.
One optional branded or campaign tag if you run one.
Skip generic engagement tags entirely. #like4like, #followme and #f4f attract bots and nobody else, and Instagram has said engagement-bait signals hurt distribution. They’re in the “most popular” lists below because people search for those lists, not because you should use them.
Where to put hashtags
In the caption, at the end, after a line break. Mosseri said in 2021 that keywords and hashtags belong in the caption rather than the comments for search purposes, and the five-tag limit now applies to comments too, so the old “first comment” trick buys you nothing and loses the search signal.
Stories: the hashtag sticker still exists. One tag, or none. Stories aren’t searchable by hashtag in any meaningful way.
Reels: same five-tag limit, same caption placement. Reels are found through the Reels tab recommendations and search, not hashtag pages, so the caption keywords matter more than the tags.
The 50 most popular Instagram hashtags
These are the highest-volume tags on the platform. Volume is exactly why they’re nearly useless: a post tagged #love competes with billions of others and gets no search benefit. Included because people search for this list, not as a recommendation.

Trending Instagram hashtags
Trending tags on Instagram are tied to events (a film release, a sports final, a viral audio) and they’re gone in a week. There’s no official trending list. Two ways to find what’s moving right now: type a topic into Instagram search and look at the suggested tags and their post counts, and watch the Reels tab for audio that keeps reappearing, then check what tags the top posts under that audio use.
Use a trending tag only if your post is about the thing. A bakery tagging the Super Bowl gets a search impression from someone looking for the game and loses them instantly.
Banned and restricted hashtags
Instagram hides or limits a hashtag when the content posted under it repeatedly breaks the rules. Some are obvious (#nudity), some aren’t (#beautyblogger, #kansas and #snowstorm have all been restricted at various times). Using one doesn’t get you banned, but it can make the post unsearchable under that tag.
Check before you use an unfamiliar tag: search it on Instagram. If the results page shows a notice that posts are hidden, or shows no recent posts at all, leave it out. With only five slots there’s no room for one that does nothing.
Finding your own hashtags
The niche sets above are a starting point. The tags that actually help you are the ones your specific audience searches for, and there’s a quick way to find them.
Search your main topic on Instagram and note the suggested tags and their counts. You’re looking for tags in the thousands to low millions, where a post can still appear near the top of results.
Open the profiles of five accounts in your niche that are slightly bigger than you, and read their last ten captions. Note the tags that repeat.
Check your own Insights (Business or Creator account, post-level, “Reach” breakdown). It still reports how many impressions came from hashtags. If that number is near zero across ten posts, your tags aren’t working and you should try different ones or spend the effort elsewhere.
Keep three or four sets of five in a note and rotate them. Reusing the identical five tags on every post isn’t banned, but varying them gives you data on what works.
Hashtags across platforms
If you post the same content to several networks, the limits differ and the tags shouldn’t just be copied. Instagram: 5 maximum, 3 to 5 recommended. TikTok: no hard cap but 3 to 5 works, and our TikTok hashtags guide covers the current ones. YouTube Shorts: 15 maximum, 3 to 5 in practice. LinkedIn: 3 to 5. X: 1 to 2. Pinterest: up to 20 but they behave as keywords. Threads: one topic tag per post, no hashtags.
A scheduler that lets you edit the caption per network (SchedPilot’s composer does this, and it enforces Instagram’s five-tag limit so a post isn’t rejected at publish time) saves you from the copy-paste that ends with a LinkedIn post carrying #reelsinstagram.
Frequently asked questions
Do hashtags still work on Instagram in 2026?
As labels, yes. As a reach tool, no. Instagram’s head Adam Mosseri has said hashtags don’t meaningfully increase visibility and in July 2026 said they never did. They still help Instagram search and Google categorise your post, and they still organise campaign content. Reach comes from watch time, likes, shares and sends.
How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?
Five per post or Reel, since 18 December 2025. Add a sixth and the caption won’t post. The same limit applies to comments. Instagram recommends three to five relevant tags.
Which Instagram hashtags get the most likes?
None of them, on their own. The most-used tags (#love, #instagood, #photooftheday) are so crowded that a post tagged with them gets no measurable benefit. Likes come from the content and from reaching the right people, which specific tags do better than popular ones.
What are the top 10 Instagram hashtags?
By post volume: #love, #instagood, #instagram, #fashion, #photography, #photooftheday, #art, #reels, #beautiful, #nature. That’s a list of what’s most used, not what’s most useful.
Should I put hashtags in the caption or the first comment?
Caption. Instagram has said keywords and hashtags in the caption help search more than in comments, and the five-tag limit applies to comments too, so the old first-comment trick gains nothing.
Can you still follow hashtags on Instagram?
No. Instagram removed hashtag following in late 2024. You can still search a hashtag and browse results.
Do hashtags work on Reels?
Same as posts: five maximum, useful for search categorisation, not for distribution. Reels are recommended based on watch time and engagement. Write a caption with the words someone would search for, add three to five tags that match, and put the effort into the first two seconds of the video.
What’s the best free Instagram hashtag generator?
Instagram’s own search bar. Type a topic and it suggests related tags with post counts, which is the same data every generator scrapes. Third-party generators (Inflact, Best-Hashtags, SISTRIX) are fine for brainstorming but most were built for the 30-tag era and will hand you a list you then have to cut to five.
Are banned hashtags still a thing?
Yes. Instagram restricts tags associated with rule-breaking content, and the list changes. Search any unfamiliar tag before using it; if the results page shows hidden posts or nothing recent, skip it.
Do hashtags help with Google?
Since July 2025, public posts from Business and Creator accounts can be indexed by Google. Captions and hashtags both contribute to what Google understands the post to be about. It’s another reason to write captions with real keywords in them rather than relying on tags.
