Best Time to Post on YouTube in 2026 (Long-Form and Shorts Run on Opposite Clocks)
The two biggest YouTube timing studies published this year look at first like they contradict each other. Some social media managers, working from 1.8 million videos, found long-form does best in the morning, 8 to 11 AM, with Sunday at 10 AM the single strongest slot of the week and weekday afternoons the weakest. Other experts, working from 301,000 videos across 27,000 channels, recommended uploading Wednesday to Friday between 2 and 4 PM.
They aren’t actually disagreeing. Some people measure engagement against the hour a video went live. While others treats upload time as lead time, and its advice is to publish two to three hours before the 6 to 9 PM evening viewing peak. Both are describing the same evening peak from different ends.
Where they line up perfectly is on the thing that matters most: Shorts and long-form videos want almost opposite schedules, and treating them as one “YouTube” is the mistake most channels make.

The short answer
| Format | Best publish window (audience’s local time) | Best days | Single best slot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long-form video | 2–4 PM weekdays (ahead of the evening peak) | Sunday, Tuesday, Monday | Sunday 10 AM |
| Shorts | 4–7 PM | Friday, Saturday, Thursday | Friday 4 PM |
| Live streams / Premieres | 7–9 PM | Thursday–Sunday | Saturday 8 PM |
| Weakest for long-form | Thursday 2 PM, Wednesday afternoons | ||
| Weakest for Shorts | Monday and Tuesday mornings |
“Publish” means the moment the video goes public, not the moment you upload it. Those should be different, and the section on scheduling explains why.
Why timing matters less on YouTube than anywhere else
Say this plainly before the tables get taken too seriously: the hour you post matters less on YouTube than on TikTok, Instagram or LinkedIn, and it’s not close.
A LinkedIn post is dead in 48 hours. A TikTok can catch fire late but mostly lives or dies in its first day. A YouTube video gets views from search, from suggested, from browse, and from playlists for months or years. Roughly a third of a typical long-form video’s lifetime views arrive after its first week. The first 24 to 48 hours still matter, because YouTube uses early click-through rate and watch time to decide how hard to push a video into Browse and Suggested, but a strong video published at a bad hour recovers on YouTube in a way it wouldn’t elsewhere.
Two things timing does affect:
- Notifications. When you publish, subscribers with the bell on get a push, and YouTube caps how many it sends per channel per day. Publish at 3 AM their time and that notification is buried under 40 others by morning.
- The first-hour test. YouTube shows a new video to a slice of subscribers and recent viewers. If that slice is asleep, CTR and average view duration in the first hour look weak, and the video gets a smaller second push.
So timing is a multiplier on a video that already has a good thumbnail and a good first 30 seconds. It’s not a rescue.
Long-form: publish ahead of the evening, not during it
Viewers watch long-form YouTube in the evening, 6 to 9 PM local, on TVs and laptops. That’s the one finding every dataset agrees on. The argument is only about how far ahead of that peak you should publish.
SocialPilot’s answer is 2 to 3 hours ahead, and I think that’s right for most channels. It gives YouTube time to finish processing (a 4K upload can take an hour or more to have HD versions ready), run the first-hour test on daytime viewers, and have the video sitting in Suggested and Home when the evening crowd opens the app. Publish at 7 PM and it’s still processing while your best audience scrolls past.
Day by day for long-form
All times in the audience’s local zone.
| Day | Publish | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 3–5 PM | Solid in Buffer’s data, underrated because fewer channels publish Mondays |
| Tuesday | 2–4 PM | Strong across every study; B2B and education channels do best here |
| Wednesday | 2–4 PM | SocialPilot’s top day; Buffer’s data is flatter |
| Thursday | 3–5 PM | Avoid 1–2 PM specifically, Buffer’s weakest slot of the week |
| Friday | 12–2 PM | Publish early; Friday evenings drop off as people go out |
| Saturday | 9–11 AM | Weekend mornings are prime for longer watch sessions |
| Sunday | 9–11 AM | Sunday 10 AM is Buffer’s best slot by a wide margin |
The Sunday morning result surprises people. It’s real, and the logic is simple: Sunday is the day people have two uninterrupted hours to watch a 25-minute video, and a morning publish catches the whole day of that. Weekend traffic is lower in total but the watch sessions are longer, and average view duration is what YouTube rewards.
Shorts: late week, late afternoon
Shorts behave like TikTok, not like YouTube. Buffer’s Shorts data puts Friday at 4 PM on top, with 6 and 7 PM Friday close behind, and Thursday, Friday and Saturday as the three best days. SocialPilot lands on Friday 4 to 7 PM as well. Monday and Tuesday are the weakest days for Shorts in both.
The mechanism is different too. Shorts get distributed through the Shorts shelf and feed, where the algorithm tests them on a small batch and expands based on swipe-away rate. That means the first 30 minutes matter far more than for long-form, and it means you want the first batch to hit people in scroll mode, which is late afternoon and evening, not the morning commute.
A few Shorts-specific rules
- Space Shorts at least 3 hours apart. Two posted back to back compete for the same test batch.
- Weekend Shorts get less total traffic but less competition, which tends to help channels under 10k subscribers more than big ones.
- Don’t publish a Short within an hour of a long-form video on the same channel. The long-form gets the notification; the Short gets nothing.
If you’re posting the same vertical clip to TikTok and Reels, note that Instagram Reels and TikTok both peak later, closer to 7 to 10 PM, and each one should be scheduled at its own peak rather than blasted out together. The best time to post on TikTok and best time to post on Instagram posts have the platform-specific tables. For length, the how long can YouTube Shorts be post covers the current limit and the length that actually gets views.

Read your own chart, it’s better than any study
YouTube Studio gives you the actual answer, and it’s more specific than anything above.
- Open YouTube Studio, go to Analytics, then the Audience tab
- Scroll to “When your viewers are on YouTube”
- Read the heat map. Darker purple is more viewers. It covers the last 28 days and is shown in your local time, so if your audience is mostly elsewhere, check the “Top geographies” card just above it and shift accordingly.
You need a few hundred views a week before this chart is worth reading. Below that it’s noise.
Then publish 2 to 3 hours before the darkest block for long-form, and right at the start of the darkest late-afternoon or evening block for Shorts. Re-check every couple of months. Audience geography drifts as a channel grows, and a single video that takes off in the UK or India will move the whole chart.
If you want the calculation done for you, the best time to post calculator takes the heat map data and returns the top three windows.
Upload early, publish on schedule
This is the practical detail that makes everything else work. Upload the video hours before, ideally the night before, set it to Scheduled, and pick your publish time. YouTube processes the video (all resolutions, the auto-generated captions, the thumbnail) while it sits private, and at the scheduled minute it goes live fully processed with the HD version ready.
Uploading and publishing at the same moment means your first-hour test runs on a video that’s still only available in 360p. That’s a real CTR and watch-time hit, and it’s entirely avoidable.
Native YouTube scheduling handles one channel fine. Where it falls apart is when you’re also pushing the clip to TikTok and Instagram, or running more than one channel, or working with an editor who uploads and a manager who approves. Schedpilot’s YouTube scheduler queues long-form and Shorts to publish at a set time through the YouTube API, lets you set a separate time per platform for cross-posted clips, and adds an approval step before anything goes live. The scheduling YouTube videos for maximum reach post walks through the setup.
How often
- Long-form: one to two a week at the same day and time. Consistency trains subscribers and the algorithm; a Tuesday 3 PM video every week beats three random uploads.
- Shorts: daily if you can, at minimum three a week. Growth on Shorts is mostly a volume game.
- Don’t sacrifice the long-form schedule to feed Shorts. Shorts subscribers convert to long-form viewers at a low rate, and watch time on long-form is still what pays. The when does YouTube start paying you post explains why.

What timing won’t fix
A bad thumbnail at Sunday 10 AM is still a bad thumbnail. Click-through rate is the first thing YouTube looks at, before watch time, before anything about the hour. If your CTR is under 4% on Browse, fix that before you touch the schedule; the thumbnail tips to boost YouTube CTR post is the place to start, and the YouTube title checker will tell you if the title is doing its share of the work.
Then the first 30 seconds. Average view duration in the first half-minute decides whether YouTube keeps pushing a video after the initial test. A strong hook at 2 PM on a Thursday outperforms a slow intro at Sunday 10 AM every time.
For tracking whether any of this is moving the needle, the best YouTube analytics tools post compares what YouTube Studio gives you for free against the paid options.
Publish long-form at 3 PM on Tuesday and 10 AM on Sunday, Shorts at 4 PM Friday, for four weeks. Then open the heat map and let it overrule me.
