Is a Buffer Free Account Worth It? Free Plan Limits vs SchedPilot (2026)
Here’s a normal week for someone running a Buffer free account. Monday: write 15 posts for Instagram, LinkedIn and X. Buffer accepts 10 per channel, so five go into a notes app. Thursday: the X queue is empty because you post there three times a day. Friday: you remember TikTok, Facebook and Threads exist, and post to them by hand from your phone because the free plan only lets you connect three channels.
That’s the free plan working exactly as designed. It’s built for someone posting a few times a week to three networks. If that’s you, keep it. If you run more than five accounts or post more than two or three times a day, the free account is costing you time every week. A flat-priced scheduler costs less than lunch.
We make SchedPilot, so read the comparison below with that in mind. We’ve tried to be fair about where Buffer’s free plan is the better pick.

What a Buffer free account gives you in 2026
Checked in October 2026:
| Limit | Buffer free account |
|---|---|
| Price | $0, no card, no expiry |
| Channels connected at once | 3 |
| Channels you can ever connect | 8 unique, lifetime |
| Scheduled posts | 10 per channel waiting in the queue |
| Users | 1 |
| Analytics | 30 days of history |
| AI Assistant | Included |
| API | 1 key, 3,000 requests a month |
Two of those limits trip people up.
The first is the 10-post cap. It counts posts waiting in the queue, not posts per month. A slot frees up every time something publishes, so you can technically post daily forever. You just can never plan more than 10 posts ahead on any channel.
The second is the lifetime connection cap. Buffer’s free plan lets you connect 8 unique channels over the life of the account, and disconnecting one doesn’t give the slot back. Freelancers who rotate client accounts in and out of the free plan hit this one hard, usually without knowing it exists until Buffer refuses the ninth connection.
How long 10 queued posts actually lasts
This is the number that matters, so here it is per channel:
| Posts per day on one channel | Queue runs out after | Refills per month (per channel) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 10 days | 3 |
| 2 | 5 days | 6 |
| 3 | 3.3 days | 9 |
| 5 (common on X and Threads) | 2 days | 15 |
Take three channels at three posts a day. That’s around 27 trips back into Buffer a month just to keep the queues topped up. Batching, the reason anyone uses a scheduler, is off the table. You can’t sit down on the first of the month and load 90 posts for X when Buffer will only hold 10.
Most of the people we talk to who’ve left Buffer free weren’t unhappy with the product. They were tired of being its unpaid queue manager.
Why three channels isn’t enough
Pick almost any small brand and count. A dental clinic: Instagram, Facebook, Google, TikTok, maybe YouTube. A solo creator: Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, X, Threads, LinkedIn. A Shopify store: Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, TikTok. Five or six is the normal number. Seven is common.
On a Buffer free account you choose three and handle the rest manually. Which means you’re still copy-pasting captions into native apps every day, and the scheduler has quietly stopped doing its job for half your accounts.
Upgrading Buffer: the per-channel bill
Once you outgrow the free account, Buffer’s answer is Essentials at $6 per channel a month ($5 on yearly billing), or Team at $12 per channel ($10 yearly) if you need approvals. Every connected channel is billed, including the three you had for free. Here’s how that compares with SchedPilot on monthly billing:
| Accounts | Buffer Essentials | Buffer Team | SchedPilot |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | $30/mo | $60/mo | $29/mo (Silver) |
| 7 | $42/mo | $84/mo | $39/mo (Gold) |
| 10 | $60/mo | $120/mo | $39/mo (Gold) |
| 20 | ~$100/mo | $200+/mo | $39/mo (Gold) |
Buffer drops channels 11 to 25 to $4 each, which is already in the 20-account row. On yearly billing SchedPilot is $21 (Silver) and $35 (Gold).
To be straight about it: at exactly 7 accounts on yearly billing, Buffer Essentials ($35) and SchedPilot Gold ($35) cost the same, and Essentials includes unlimited scheduled posts. If 7 is your ceiling and you only want a queue, Buffer is a fine choice. Past that, per-channel billing grows with every account you add and ours doesn’t. We go through the rest of the market in our Buffer alternatives roundup.

What $21 to $35 a month gets you instead
SchedPilot prices by plan, not by channel. You pay one flat number and connect any mix of Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, X, Facebook, Threads, Bluesky and Pinterest up to the plan’s limit.
Silver is $29 a month, or $21 billed yearly. 5 accounts, 450 posts a month, account analytics, AI post suggestions, carousels and API access. 450 posts across 5 accounts is 90 each, which is three posts a day on every account, every day of the month. That’s the exact posting rate where a Buffer free account turns into a chore, covered for $21.
Gold is $39 a month, or $35 yearly, and it’s the plan we’d point you to once you’re past five accounts. 20 accounts, unlimited posts, 5 workspaces for separate brands or clients, AI-generated posts and hooks, replying to posts and comments from the dashboard, and 300 GPT-5 credits.
Neither plan has a queue cap. Load a full month on the first, check analytics on the fifteenth, and otherwise leave it alone.
The part Buffer’s free account can’t really match is automation. Every plan includes our API and MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or an n8n workflow can draft posts, attach media and queue them across all your accounts, with each post waiting in your calendar for approval before it goes out. Buffer free gives you 3,000 API requests a month on a single key, which is enough to test an idea and not much more.
Where we’re weaker, so you’re not surprised:
- No free-forever plan. You get a 7-day trial that asks for a card and charges $0 until day 8.
- Team seats and approval workflows start on Enterprise ($79/mo). A three-person team on 10 accounts can find cheaper tools.
- No social listening.
- We’re younger than Buffer and integrate with fewer third-party apps.
If you’d rather never see a monthly bill, there’s a $299 lifetime licence, capped at 100 buyers.
Stay on Buffer free if this is you
One to three accounts, a few posts a week, working alone. Ten queued posts at three posts a week is more than three weeks of runway, and the free plan includes X, which Publer’s and Metricool’s free tiers don’t. Don’t pay for a scheduler you don’t need. For a head-to-head on features beyond the free plan, see Buffer vs SchedPilot.
Switching from a Buffer free account
Buffer doesn’t export scheduled posts, so there’s nothing to import, and honestly you won’t miss it. Start the trial and connect every account, including the ones that never fit into Buffer’s three slots. Leave your Buffer queue running so the posts already in it publish normally. Rebuild your schedule in SchedPilot starting with the accounts Buffer wasn’t covering, and don’t schedule the same post in both tools during the overlap or it goes out twice. After a week, disconnect your channels in Buffer.
Our suggestion: if you’re on four or more accounts or posting daily, start the trial on Gold and try to schedule a full month in the first seven days. If you can’t fill it, cancel before day 8 and go back to Buffer free. Nothing charged, and you’ll know which side of the line you’re on.
